Trains delayed by stricken lorry

Thursday 19th February 2009, 1:06PM GMT.

Train travelTrain passengers faced delays after a lorry got stuck under a railway bridge near Oswestry for several hours.

The lorry got stuck under a bridge on the Queen’s Head to Rednal road, near West Felton, shortly before 12.30pm.

The railway line between Gobowen and Shrewsbury was closed temporarily while it was inspected, with train services diverted.

Rachel Blackman, Network Rail spokeswoman, said: “The line was closed while we made checks to see it was structurally sound. The line reopened at 1.35pm.”

A West Mercia Police spokesman said nobody was injured, but police were on scene for several hours, although the road was not closed.

He said: “It was a low bridge and the lorry was too big. It was a railway bridge by a canal on a minor road on the main Gobowen to Shrewsbury line.

“The bridge had to be assessed to check for damage before the lorry was moved.”

Maria Hawkaluk, police spokeswoman, said: “The trailer caused minor damage to the bridge. We arranged for the recovery of the lorry.”

A spokeswoman for Arriva Trains Wales said: “There were two trains diverted via Crewe. One train was stranded at Gobowen for a while. We did organise for road transport, but the train got moving again when the line reopened at 1.35pm.

“Obviously any diversions are annoying for passengers so we apologise for that.”
