FTSE 100 rises on banking rally

The FTSE 100 rose slightly from last night’s 2009 low to 4,010.01, as financial and mining stocks rallied.
Publisher Reed Elsevier was trading highest on the index by 08:51 GMT, up by 4.71 per cent, followed by Royal Bank of Scotland, which rose by 4.42 per cent to 18.9p.
Lloyds Banking Group was also climbing, and was up by 3.54 per cent, while miner Kazakhmys rose 2.99 per cent.
However, several stocks were still falling, led by the London Stock Exchange, which was down by 5.48 per cent.
Over in the US, the Dow Jones recovered slightly from a shaky start to close seven points up at 7,559.61, although it is still under the psychological 8,000 mark.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 also closed higher, by 0.31 per cent.
