Eighteen jobs lost at stores
Thursday 19th February 2009, 3:50PM GMT.
Eighteen jobs were axed in Telford today after two shops closed with immediate effect while another was put at risk.
Qube and OSC (Original Shoe Company), both in Telford Shopping Centre, have shut with immediate effect.
The stores are part of sportswear giant JJB’s lifestyle division, which was placed into the hands of administrators earlier this month.
Administrator KPMG today closed 45 shops with the loss of 438 jobs.
The remaining 32 stores will be run by the administrators.
The news was followed by the loss of 2,500 jobs at Barratt and Priceless shoe group Stylo.
Administrators Deloitte said 220 stores would have to close, but confirmed it had secured the sale of 160 shops and 165 concessions in a move expected to safeguard 3,000 roles.
A spokeswoman for Shropshire’s only Barratt store in Telford Shopping Centre said they had not yet been told anything about their future.
Meanwhile Katy Broomhead, for KPMG, said staff at the Telford Qube and OSC stores, which employ nine people each, had been made redundant with immediate effect.
Richard Fleming, joint administrator and head of KPMG restructuring in the UK, said: “It has been well documented that both companies have been running at a substantial loss.”

Here’s a clue to how Telford Town Centre can a) help local people suffering the credit crunch and b) help shops suffering the credit crunch – GET RID OF THE PARKING CHARGES – increased footfall = increased interest = increased spending = decreased empty units !!!!

Empty the shopping centre then demolish it and try again.
