Water firm in price hike
Wednesday 18th February 2009, 12:00AM GMT.
Severn Trent Water is putting up bills to households by an inflation-busting five per cent from April 1.
It will mean the annual average demand rising by £15 to reach £305 for 2009/10.
Regina Finn, chief executive officer of official regulator Ofwat, said the rise of two per cent, plus inflation at three per cent, would help Severn Trent continue spending millions of pounds to improve and maintain services.

how do they think people will find the money ??
i no its not sound a lot but to some familes it is.
its time to privtise the water industry to stop these over priced rises just to give the fat cats pay rises
Report abuse
Too many people on our small island!
This is disgusting.
They don’t improve or maintain their services.
They should fix all their leaks.
and the reason for this is because?…………
Report abuse
They would not be trying to get back the money they were fined. Would they??
Hang on a minute?
Weren’t they fined for over chargeing a couple of years ago? But they have put their prices up every year since. So if they were overcharging two years ago and their prices are even higher now, doesn’t that mean they are still overcharging???
If a private business was accused of overcharging and then went on to put it’s prices upven more, how many customers do you think that company would have coming back to them ?….easy maths question that one! (and the answer to anyone at Severn Trent who can’t work it out, is less than one)
I bet you pay more than this for satellite tv. Less than a pound a day for unlimited fresh water, I don’t think that’s so unreasonable.

struggling on limited income. The first hike of the year ..Fat cats get fatter and we get poorer.
But it wont change until we all stand up and say enough is enough. Next the Council taxes.

indefencible

Monkey, I think you’ll find the water industry is privatised, and has been since the late 1980′s.
The word you want is nationalised, but how do you think the taxpayer is going to fund your bright idea when the banks have been pretty much brought into public ownership in the last six months?
David, im guessing you dont live in the Oswestry area as the taste of the water here is absolutely disgusting! We have to buy bottled water so in effect pay twice for suitable drinking water and now they increase the charges. Does this company think everyone is flush with money? The have us over a barrel and we have to accept their bog standard water quality. I wonder how many millions of pounds profit they will make this year or should that be hundreds of millions?? The real winners? The shareholders….
This is daylight robbery.
Water is a natural resource, and is essential for life.
The Whole industry should be Nationalised, and water provided free of charge for normal domestic use – (and similar “domastic use, ie “personal” use within the work place).
That is: Providing what is an essential “life” resource (and always has been an essential resource since the dawn of life on earth)..
.. should be the responsibilty of Government, and thus paid for out of taxataion.
Water is not like a “manufactured” product, where profit on sales of which lines the pockets of shareholders and directors.
people should try to use less for the planet

The price rise is on April 1st…..it’s a joke…..isn’t it?????….;-)
trains, water, buses all failing
can anyone think of a scuccessful privatisation at all?
its already privatised monkey thats why its so inefficient and expensive because of the lazy fat cats getting rich at our expense
Report abuse
Zoe – the reason for this is -
some greedy little oik is thinking about shareholders and their bonuses long before they think about providing a cost effective service to the customer.
there costs must be going down as engineers and construction workers become ten a penny, plus we are all using less now being green and showering instead of bathing etc, so how can they justify a price hike, i think the price should be going down if anything
its not like i can cancel my bill is it, and go to southern water instead, a monopoly in the private sector should be illegal, severn trent needs breaking up or nationalising, end of
Report abuse
it is because maggie thatcher privatised OUR water industry that prices are continually rising.the water companies now make money for their shareholders and the water users come last, and continually pay increases to keep the shareholders investing.
to be fair to the tories, so much money needed spending on underground pipes etc the government in the 1980′s could not afford to invest in our water industry and took the easy way out, privatise and let the shareholders pay for the investment. now it is time for shareholders to reap what they have sown!
Maybe we should all ask for water meters? Would this help with the cost? iv been wondering this for a long time as there is only me and my son here and to be honest we use very little water!
Lesley,
I moved last year from a house with no water meter to one with a water meter. Despite having a family of four, my water bills have actually reduced a little – I believe the savings for smaller families are even greater
– so yes – I would ask for a meter if I were you.
this is Labour that did this, the Party of high prices, unemployment and high taxes, high rates, the lot, the Labour party desire to pamper to EU environmental reulations and the greeny lefty lobby are why your water bills go up, we would get out of the EU and go back tto the good old days of being GREAT britain, we would make water free, not on meters, that is a big brother move from a lfty nany state, the private sector will be more efficiency and we will make water better, remember the bad old days of british rail, on strike and leaves on the line, well maggie sorted them lot, god bless her, and you socialists who want the government to own it can go vote labour or leave the uk as far as im concerned, you sorry socialists
Report abuse
water meters are an answer, so are water butts for conserving water for the garden. water meter has saved us about 40% on our water bills
Report abuse
the tories were wrong in the 80′s and bliar was wrong in the 90′s
natural resources and especially natural monopolies like phone lines are better off in the PUBLIC ownership
this is i think now a universally accepted fact as all your other posters have commented, its just now working out in private hands, lets nationalise them
Report abuse
Lesley,
I wouldn’t believe EVERYTHING that you read about water meters. I live alone and YES my water bill is SLIGHTLY less than if I was not metered, but if I had a partner living here that might not be the case.
When I had mine installed they gave you 12 months to try it and then you go go back to “unmetered” bills if you weren’t happy (unfortunately my house was mainly empty for that 12 months so I wasn’t able to guage it)….if they are still doing that then go for it but I can’t see how a family of four can have lower bills on a water meter than without, myself.

well said harlescott, the blame lies with successive governments. the reason rail fares are so expensive can be traced back to heavy under investment by succesive governments probably starting with transport minister ernie marples and dr beeching in 1960 and successive administration have washed their hands of our railways not helped by a botched privatisation job in the early 1990′s
Report abuse
simply switch suppliers like you would with gas,
oh no wait because of maggie, we cant do that,
surely then nationalisation is the only answer?
Monopolies cannot be allowed to exist in the private sector
Report abuse
lets all chuck stuff down the drain and block th sewers to protest against them
Report abuse
ill have no one talking down maggie right, god bless her, she was a saint, you lot dont know what your talking about its cheaper in the private sector than it would be if you nationalised it that’s for sure, privatisation is a success in the mobile phones market and for electricity too
Report abuse
the governemnt should act to cap this like the do with council tax rises
for the sake of the economy and recovery we need cash in our pockets so tax and utlilities must be reduced
Report abuse
peter from Wem- good idea- they are a bad service provider so lets block sewers up and then complain about the fact you now have detritus back feeding into your house, street etc! how stupid?
askeric dotcom- water may be a natural resource but there is the little matter of filtration and ensuring you can safely drink it!
Oh and what about sewerage treatment?
