Town’s win could have been easier

Patience and an inspired half-time substitution from Simpson helped Town overcome local rivals Chester at the Prostar Stadium, writes STFC blogger James Pugh.
Having been fortunate not to be 2-0 down, Town got their goal and could have won the game a lot more easily than 1-0, with Humphreys starring in a brilliant second half performance.
Simpson made a bold half-time substitution by replacing Chadwick with Walker after a frustrating first half – and what a difference it made. It was good to see Walker get another goal for Town. He has been one of the biggest disappointments for me this season, but when he came on he showed a lot of determination and proved how effective he can be in his role as a ‘fox in the box’.
The only negative from the game was that we failed to convert a lot of our second half chances, although some credit must go to Chester’s goalkeeper. Holt was one of the biggest culprits and how he did not score, I don’t think even he will know.
On Saturday a Davies-inspired Town won a hard-fought game against Chesterfield and there were some signs that the club was re-gaining a bit of its old form.
We have certainly suffered as a result of Davies’s form recently which just shows how much we rely on him and what he means to the team.
Chadwick and Dunfield had their best games for the club to date, which hopefully means they are starting to settle, although I still don’t think Chadwick is going to score the goals we are looking for to take the pressure off Holt.
It was also good to see Herd come back into the side after so long on the sidelines and perform to his usual high standards.
Interestingly the Town’s home attendance prior to the Chester game slipped to under 5,000 which has been a rarity this season. Whether it is a result of the club’s inconsistent form or the cold weather, the second half of the season is when the team need the support the most.
Following two successive home games, it is now two away against struggling sides Luton and Macclesfield.
So far this season these types of matches have proved to be very unsuccessful, but if we are serious about promotion only a minimum of four points will do.
Off the pitch Town have been nominated for the Family Club of the Year in League Two. Although not as important as a Team of the Year Award, for example, it shows the club is doing something right off the field and looking after its supporters.

I am happy to take six points and have average performances.
What we must now do is start to win away to consolidate our position.
Credit must go to Chris Humphrey for his second half performance but he must do this more often.
Steve Leslie did not seem at the races last night with some poor distribution and not enough say on the game.
Here is for another 3 points on Saturday.
