Man jailed for role in killing

Wednesday 18th February 2009, 3:00PM GMT.

A mid Wales man was jailed for four years today for killing a student who the court acknowledged he might not have laid a finger on.

Sion Hardy, 24, was beaten to death during a fight with a group of students in an underpass in the early hours of 15 November 2007.

Mr Hardy, a civic design student at Liverpool University, was rushed to hospital but died from a heavy blow to the left side of his neck.

In May last year Simon Taylor and Kevin O’Dea, both 22, were jailed for seven years after being convicted of manslaughter.

Today, at Liverpool Crown Court, Thomas Canning, 22, admitted manslaughter because it was a joint enterprise and he was fighting with another man in the underground tunnel.

Canning, of Crickhowell, Powys, pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and will only serve two years behind bars.
