Road repair bill to top £100,000

Highways chiefs are facing a bill of more than £100,000 for the damage the long winter has caused to Shropshire’s road network.
It will be some weeks before the total cost of repairing potholes and cracks to road surfaces becomes known.
But it will certainly be at least £100,000 across the county council area, and possibly a lot more.
The authority yesterday took delivery of more salt to keep stocks topped up and ready should the icy weather make a comeback.
“We were getting a bit tight on salt but were still comfortable,” said divisional surveyor Peter Lloyd.
The county council and Telford & Wrekin Council joined forces earlier in the month to deal with the national shortage of salt.
Over a couple of days, Telford & Wrekin decided to limit the amount of gritting taking place to cover A and B roads, roads serving emergency service sites, and main bus routes.
And in order to ensure that the supply of rock salt lasted until new stocks were delivered, the county council concentrated resources on treating the “defined” network of A and B roads and a few high risk sites.
Mr Lloyd said the full extent of winter damage would become known over the coming weeks.
“We always get more potholes at the end of any winter. But winter started back in October and so we are going to get more potholes than normal,” he said.
“Generally the roads appear to have to stood up to the winter weather quite well but we are starting to see some defects.”
Mr Lloyd said the council planned its winter maintenance programme during the summer, covering such things as the number of gritters, salt levels and training for contractors and snow plough operators.

Generally speaking the roads have been in need of major repair before the bad weather!
Its not as if a lot of SALT was used.
When ever we have reported/requested work done to our local roads we have been told that there is no money in the pot. Long before the snow arrived!

There’s never any money in the pot for road repairs. Each year, the council creams off the top of every department budget to pay for the spongers of this world. The ones with kids from three different fathers, who have no intention of working and paying their way(Or Their Council Tax).

It is no use the council moaning about the high costs of repairs following bad weather. The problems existed before and all concerned should know of the saying “a stitch in time saves nine”. Will they learn a lesson for the future ?

dont bother its a good traffic calming measure

A council spokesperson said…”It will be some weeks before the total cost of repairing potholes and cracks to road surfaces becomes known.”
I say, that in my experience…It will be MANY,MANY months before the repairs are carried out!!!

What will £100 000 get you? You’d have trouble affording a grotty little flat in Gains Park.
I wasn’t aware that the council were ‘moaning’, just stating facts. It hardly sounds like a huge amount when you consider how many miles of road there are in Shropshire.

labour is failing, they never spend enough on new roads but they constantly waste money on things like benefits, when dave cameron is in charge we will spend lots of money on good things like roads and cars and less money on bad things like the public sector, we will cut taxes and you will be able to drive in more comfort too

we need more roads like a hole in the head
we need to drive less

sakc the lot of them and get a private firm in to do the road repairs i say, they will do it on time, to budget with no strikes and tea breaks not like the council workers,

Tory Boy, I think that will find that outside contractors do the road repairs etc, which is why road works such as the Old Park roundabout cost £140,000 for a few bits of plastic. Councils are spending vast fortunes on outside contractors who put in grossly inflated tenders.
