Councillors cleared on parking claims
Tuesday 17th February 2009, 2:29PM GMT.
Three Shrewsbury councillors, including the council leader, have been cleared after accusations were made about their treatment of ParkRight officers.
The accusations included making “snide comments”.
A council watchdog ruled there was no evidence Councillors Andrew Wagner, Stephen Williams and Peter Nutting had breached the code of conduct.
It comes after Councillor Judith Williams offered to write a letter of apology to ParkRight officials when she was found to have breached the code by failing to treat officers with “respect”.
Sandy Harper, the former manager of ParkRight, made a complaint against Councillor Wagner and husband and wife councillors Judith and Stephen Williams claiming comments made to employees in the street and remarks in emails breached the code.
But a committee found there was no evidence against Councillors Wagner and Stephen Williams. A separate complaint against Councillor Nutting accused him of calling officers “over zealous”.
The sub-committee found his comments were not disrespectful.
A report to the standards committee, which will meet on February 24, says Councillor Judith Williams was told to undertake training with the monitoring officer.
Today she said: “The letter has been sent.
“I have also had the training suggested.”
She added: “Stephen feels it is the correct decision and anything against him was unproven.”
Councillor Wagner said: “It was the right decision.”
Dave Roberts, SABC community safety officer, who now looks after ParkRight, said he found the four members extremely professional.
