Schools offer pupils condoms
Monday 16th February 2009, 1:30PM GMT.
The Government was today accused of failing to seek the views of parents on school sex and relationship education (SRE). The accusation was made by the Family Education Trust.
It said a Government SRE review made no attempt to consult parents about what children should learn and when.
Meanwhile, a growing number of Shropshire secondary schools have taken up a scheme which gives free condoms to pupils to help prevent teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. The latest is the Corbet School at Baschurch.
The review into SRE was ordered over concerns that teaching of the subjects was too patchy.
Following the review in October last year the Government announced plans for primary children to be given compulsory sex education lessons from age seven. Some campaign groups, including the Family Education Trust which promotes “traditional” family values, reacted angrily.
And the trust said today that data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act showed that the review group failed to commission any survey of parental concerns.
A spokesman for the Department for Children, Schools and Families said parents’ views were sought.
