Gorge repairs delayed by weather
Monday 16th February 2009, 3:59PM GMT.
Major roadworks to replace the ageing electricity supply in Shropshire’s top tourist destination are taking longer than expected, it was revealed today.
The cold snap and complex ground conditions have hampered contractors in the Ironbridge Gorge and they will have to come back later in the year to complete the job.
But they have promised to ensure a clutter-free route for the 500-plus runners due to compete in the Ironbridge Half Marathon on March 22.
Workmen from Integrated Utility Services are replacing the power cables underneath The Wharfage and below the arch of the Iron Bridge.
Project manager Ray MacDonald said: “We have been in touch with Telford Harriers, organisers of the half marathon.
“Work will be closed down that weekend, the traffic lights will be taken off and road plates put down the ensure The Wharfage is smooth under foot.”

Lets hope that the workmen from “Integrated Utility Services” know how to put back the stone pavements in the correct fashion (If they haven’t already smashed them to pieces). The last thing we need is for the council to have to repair the shoddy work these utility companies churn out. it wouldn’t suprise me if they just tarmaced over the lot!!
