Fire staff facing interviews

Monday 16th February 2009, 3:30PM GMT.

Fire crewOfficials at the Fire Officers Association today said the suspension of control staff from Shropshire Fire headquarters was affecting a “large number” of people as all workers are expected to be interviewed as part of the investigation.

The staff, based at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service’s headquarters in St Michael’s Street, Shrewsbury, were suspended last week as part of an internal disciplinary investigation.

But fire service chiefs are refusing to say why they have been suspended or how many people are involved.

Alan Tranter, executive board member for the West Midlands region of the Fire Officers Association, said today he hoped the matter would be sorted out as soon as possible.

He said: “It is affecting quite a large number of people. It is my understanding that the majority, if not all, of the fire control staff will be involved as a consequence of this investigation.

“We are very concerned that people have been suspended and we would want this matter sorted out quickly and people returned to work as soon as possible not only for the well-being of the staff but for the good of the service and the people of Shropshire.

“At the end of the investigation the authority does not have to discuss any information. The staff have had primary interviews and we are aware of certain facts but, so as not to compromise the investigation, it would be wrong to comment at this stage.”

It is understood up to five people have been suspended.

What – all workers within the Fire Control or ALL workers in Shropshire F+RS??

If it’s the latter…that’s a lot of workers!

Time for the senior management to reveal what this is all about. I’m not really a fan of these things (internal investigations and suspensions etc) being made open to the media and still believe the Fire Service should have had the chance to conduct its own inquiries without media interest.

Presumably an insider tipped the media off about all this. I wonder why?

In the meantime, if a ‘large number’ of employees are affected, then it’s probably about time they made a statement to the taxpayers as to what this matter entails. Because it’s certainly going to come out sooner or later, whether managers want it or not.

Really I dont thin kthis is a story, Shropshire Star… All you are dong is encouraging rumour and speculation… And possibly encouraging this whole investigation, (which after this amount of time is bound to have cost us, as taxpayers, tens of thousands of pounds and counting after time to interview suspects and witnesses, not to mention the calls from press and public are taken into account), to be compromised.

Either tell us what is going on or keep out of it…

what we need is more brave fire fighters and less beurocrats in the office co-ordinating the smoke alarm delivery etc, too much public money is wasted on this type of waffle, if the fire brigade was privatised like it should be, we would probably only have to pay a tenner a year for it, as it stands its about 80 pound for every tax payer, and the vast bulk of this is not trucks and men, its only civil servants in suits and back office managers doing paper work, what a waste of public funds, lets cut taxes and stop this kind of waste
