Drayton’s Wembley dream dies
Monday 16th February 2009, 12:28PM GMT.
Boss Simon Line bemoaned his side’s lacklustre defending as Market Drayton crashed out of the FA Vase with a 4-2 defeat at Biggleswade Town.
Drayton were the better team for lengthy periods but were made to pay for some costly errors at the back.
“This was a game that somehow got away from us,” said a bitterly disappointed Line.
“I’m sure if you looked at all the statistics of the game – corners, free-kicks and shots in second half especially – it was a game that we were on top of.
“We’ve hit the woodwork twice, their ‘keeper has made a couple of good saves, we’ve missed a couple of sitters, but at crucial times we have defended very poorly.”
Striker Tom Ward levelled for the visitors after the Waders had taken an early lead, but the home side went on to charge into a 4-1 advantage.
Drayton continued to create chances but could only score once more and their dreams of Wembley are over for another season.
Line continued: “We’ve created less chances this season and scored six or seven goals.
“There are lots of positives to take from this run but you can’t come here and concede four goals and expect to do anything.
“It could quite easily have been 4-4 but we have to get back to basics of keeping clean sheets which, until the beginning of January, we were doing on a regular basis.
“I’m proud that we’ve got to the fifth round of the FA Vase.
“It’s a great achievement and the lads have got to take credit for that.
“But now we have to forget about it and do what we are here to do which is win the league.”
Leaders Drayton are back in Midland Alliance action tomorrow night when they make the trip to Shropshire rivals Bridgnorth Town.
