Monday 16th February 2009, 3:40PM GMT.
Shrewsbury’s new town council looks set to have a budget of more than £3 million for its first year and employ 70 staff, it was confirmed today.
Officials have published a fresh report outlining what the council is expected to spend money on and which staff positions will be transferred to it.
It says the authority is expected to spend £3.1 million in the first year with £2.1 million going on horticultural services.
The town council, which will be based at the Guildhall, is expected to bring in a third of its income from council tax.

Isn’t it about time some of these tiers of local government were cut out?
I mean – £3 million for a ‘town’ council?
The mind boggles.

I cannot believe that the Town Council planning to spend £2.1 million on horticultural services.
What revenue do they directly recover from the horticultural expenditure, and so what is the nett cost the Council tax payers.
Disgusting, they should be ashamed of themselves considering all the financial pressures that many of their tax are under.
They seem to enjoy having their pictures taken next to a bunch of pansies.

£3m is peanuts. A typical secondary school, with say 1200 pupils on the roll, would have an annual turnover of £4-5m.

3 million! divided by 45000 households works out as 67 £ each, when it was SABC with millions of other services it was only about 100 £ each, how can grass cutting make up over 50% of the budget it doesnt add up, all the services have gone to the new unitary and yet its still almost as expensive as before
that is criminal
