Telford & Wrekin Council has agreed to press ahead with £250 million plans to create a civic heart for the borough, helping to create hundreds of jobs in the construction industry.
Cabinet members have set out the ground rules and priorities for a deal between public and private sectors to develop Telford Town Centre.
And delegated authority has been granted to council officers to enter a collaboration agreement with the other partners.
The decision was taken in private session due to confidential, commercially sensitive information being discussed. But details have now been released in a report to the next cabinet meeting on February 23.
It explains how Councillor Eric Carter, cabinet member for regeneration, presented a report about the proposed transformation of the town centre around Southwater, stimulating a multi-million pound boost for the local economy.
“The regeneration of Telford Town Centre was a key priority for the council, its partners and the region,” the report says.
Council leaders have earmarked £17 million for the scheme, with similar contributions by the Homes and Communities Agency and Advantage West Midlands. It is hoped private companies will invest around £200 million.
