Borough probe on ‘fraud’ card case
Monday 16th February 2009, 12:15PM GMT.
Council bosses in Shropshire have launched an investigation after somebody allegedly spent points on a cloned council Nectar card to reduce bills on their shopping.
It is believed a number of items have been purchased illegally using points collected on the authority’s loyalty card which should only be used for council purposes.
Councillor Peter Nutting, leader of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, said an investigation had now been launched.
He said: “An incident has taken place and a full investigation is under way. The police will probably be involved.”
The council amasses a large total of points because its vehicles are regularly filled up at pumps at garages participating in the Nectar scheme.
Nectar card points can be collected and used in shops such as Sainsbury’s and some pub chains, as well as companies including BP, Hertz and the AA.
It is believed the card was stolen or cloned last summer but the fact it was not being used genuinely was not revealed until the autumn.
It is understood the card has since been cancelled.
The matter was discussed behind closed doors at a Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council audit committee meeting on Thursday but the full details are not yet known.
Nectar has sponsors through which cardholders earn points.

and why do the council have a nector card, I thought buisnesses are not allowed them, or did someone in the council use it and saying oh it got cloned, a nector card isnt like a debit or credit card, you dont put it in a ATM and then it gets copied that way. You either use it online or in shops, and the council never payed for the points so why are they moaning about it!!
