Matt dives in for Drayton’s big day

Friday 13th February 2009, 11:49AM GMT.

From striker in the Shropshire Alliance to goalkeeper in the last 16 of the FA Vase – that’s the challenge for Market Drayton Town’s newest recruit.

Former professional goalkeeper Matt Boswell – who now plays up front for Hanwood United Reserves – will don the gloves for Drayton tomorrow for their massive fifth round tie at Biggleswade Town.

The former Port Vale, Barnet and Kidderminster shot-stopper will step in for regular keeper Andy Pryce, who is away in Las Vegas on team-mate Paul Bowyer’s stag do.

“I know Tom Ward (Drayton striker) but I certainly wasn’t expecting the call-up,” said the 31-year-old, son of former Shrewsbury Town and Wolves keeper Alan Boswell.

“I was just in the right place at the right time I guess, but I’m really looking forward to the match.”

And Pontesbury-based Boswell, now a football agent, feels he can offer the Drayton lads some wise words having enjoyed a memorable FA Cup run with Burscough in 2005-06, during which they knocked out then-League One side Gillingham.

He added: “Burscough and Drayton are similar in some respects – small village teams punching above their weight in a national competition.

“Hopefully I can help them with some of my experience. One thing that I did learn was not to get ahead of yourself.

“We have a big game tomorrow – if we can get through that then we are a step closer but that is all.

“You can tell which lads are nervous and who requires a word in their ear.”

Boswell will also be staying with Drayton on Tuesday for their Midland Alliance match at Bridgnorth.
