Simpson aims for top three
Wednesday 11th February 2009, 11:55AM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town can still challenge for automatic promotion this season if they can resolve their miserable away record, boss Paul Simpson has insisted.
Last night’s 4-0 victory for Exeter over Macclesfield saw Town drop out of the play-off positions and into eighth place.
But the congested nature of the top-of-the-table gives Simpson hope his side can yet push for a top three finish – even though they have just a solitary away victory to their name so far this season.
“It’s been a case of getting back to basics this week and doing things that we were doing earlier on in the season,” said the Town boss. The thing we have been emphasising to the players is that it is still in our own hands.
“We are in a position where we have all the top teams to come and if we have any aspirations of getting promotion, we have to address the away form.
“We are all fully aware that one win in the League away from home is nowhere near acceptable. But it is still there for us – there is no doubt about that.
“We play Chesterfield, Chester and Luton in the next week and the League table can look a lot different after that, but we have to address the away form.”
Meanwhile, Simpson has confirmed Turkish forward Omer Riza is on trial at the Prostar Stadium.
The 29-year-old will not be able to aid Town’s promotion push this season as he is serving a four-month ban, imposed by the Turkish FA for a breach of contract following a dispute with former club Trabzonspor.
“I remember Omer before he went out to play in Turkey and I was interested in taking him at the time,” added Simpson.
“He did really well in Turkey and got in their national squad. Unless it is overturned by FIFA, he has got a four-month ban now which won’t expire before the end of the season.
“But he wants to train with us and prove he is worth a contract here after that. He is a good player with a good pedigree and is improving all the time in training so we will monitor that.”

Now your just raising people’s hopes up without justification mate. Come on Simmo, we can all see it’s the play-offs or nowt this season. If we had the midfield 4 we started the season with it would help.

STOP KNOCKING Paul Simpson he his doing a great job.
The lynch mob started on Gary Peters even when things were going quite well and now they have started on Paul Simpson.

I am fully behind Simmo and believe the club is in a much better position than the one Gary Peters left it in.
The irony is Denis that many of the people criticising Simmo are the very same people who thought Peters should have more time.
People turned on Peters when we were in a dreadful position and going nowhere, people need to remember that we are but a whisker away from promotion still, despite the miserable away form.

It would be interesting to know if any of the knockers are so called supporters who never actually go to see Town play. If there are such people commenting on here then they need to think again about the damage they are doing to the club.

I think the point Tommy was making is that maybe just concentrating on the next few games would be the best option, rather than making statements about promotion which might come back to haunt Simpson later in the year and increase the pressure on the boss and the players should we not make it. Remember how Peters “this is the best set of players we’ve ever had” came back to haunt him?
Wins v Chesterfield, Chester and Luton would be great, but lets get those in the bag first, then look where we stand before suggesting automatic promotion might be on.

play offs are achievable providing we start winning away, and continue to make the prostar a fortress. so get off the managers back and let him manage. simmo rules ok

The division is incredibly tight you just have to keep winning and todays result against Chesterfield is another step forward :-)

No playoffs are achievable as long as the home record continues and town keep getting points on the road. If town can get a few away wins then automatic is a still real possibility.
