Picture by Ian SheppardGovernment minister Ed Balls joined football superstar Bryan Robson in Telford today to sing the praises of sport as a way of getting children healthy – and improving their exam results.

Speaking to delegates at the Sports Colleges Conference at Telford International Centre, the Schools Secretary said: “Every child has got talent and, with the right support, every young person can succeed.

“Sports colleges take the commitment and ambition for sport and translate that into the classroom.”

Mr Balls, who also visited Sutherland  College in Trench, Telford, said traditional sports like football, rugby and cricket, and more unusual ones like judo and dancing, were vital for young people. Sport encouraged parents to play a much large role in their children’s education, he said.

“And, once again, specialist sports colleges have the fastest growing rise in GCSE results for the third year running,” he added.

Mr Robson, who posed for photographs outside the conference hall, said: “Sport is really important for young people and that’s why I’ve come here.

“I used to play football in the streets for four or five hours every night after school.”
