How could you leave dog to die?

LETTER: It is with a mixture of sadness and deep gratitude that I write this letter.
On January 26, at approximately 7.20am, my dog, Toby, was knocked down and killed in Pool Farm Avenue, Leegomery, by a hit-and-run driver.
I completely understand that it was an accident, Toby was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The driver was not to blame.
However, I cannot understand how any person involved in such an accident can drive off without any thought for the chaos they have left behind.
Toby came from the Dogs Trust Rescue Centre at Roden and had been with us for less than two years. During that time he brought immense pleasure into our home.
Latterly, he brought great pleasure to the residents of the Birkdale Nursing Home in Oakengates where he had just started visiting as a Pets as Therapy visiting dog.
Fortunately, I was helped by Ralph Williams, who is an Arriva Bus driver based at the Wellington depot. Ralph went above and beyond what you could ever hope for from a passing stranger.
I wish to publicly thank Ralph for all his assistance and comfort at what was a dreadfully distressing time. It is good to know that there are still some decent people who are willing to help in times of need.

Sue I can’t believe anyone would do this.. is this the kind of world we live in? I feel gulity if I knock a Rabbit over and have to stop to check its out of its misery… Whoever this person is I hope this comes back on you, Like I always say ‘what goes around comes around’ I would be heartbroken if my dog was knocked down and no one reported it… I think its against the law isn’t it? Not reporting it!!! Ralph i’m so glad their are people like you in this world.

Ditto – How many people stop when they knock down cats and other wildlife? The majority are very selfish and carry on driving with no regard to the well being of the animal they have knocked over and severly injured.
These people if caught should receive a driving ban as they clearly do not have a acceptable mindset to be on charge of a dangerous machine

I believe there’s a legal requirement to report knocking over a dog – not so with cats.
It’s a pity he wasn’t on a lead…

Shame Toby wasn’t safely behind a garden fence, this would never have happened then.

So sorry about Toby. We have got a rescued Border Collie (she is the third one we have had), our 2nd one only had two and a half years with us and died suddenly, so I hope that perhaps some time in the future you will take on another deserving rescue in memory of Toby.

knocking down cats etc although a shame we cant stop for every bunny etc . As for the dog it should have been reported are you sure it has not ?? would not be a police priority would it??. Then the owner is liable for any damage caused hence pet insurance now how many pet owners have that?? and is it not an offence for your dog to be roaming ? roden she do better checks in my book .

its only a dog you people make me sick, put people first not animals, its a sad day when the british love dogs more than god, i blame the EU

It is a pity more are not killed, dogs should not be allowed out of the owners property. Dog owners only take their dogs out for a walk/defecate to keep their own property clean.

Why was the dog loose on the road? whilst I sympathise with Sue it could have caused an accident with a person being hurt get this into perspective.

Tory Boy, you make me sick!!
Have some compasion and spare a thought about the persons feelings that have lost there dog (I would even sugest think before you type).
It is distresing for people when a pet is killed in this way, maybe you are not an animal lover or have not had a pet so do not understand the pleasure that the can give.
Our cat was run over 3 weeks ago and left at the side of the road to die so I know how this family feels.

Tory Boy, it’s because of people like you that we prefer dogs to humans, YOU make me sick!!!

Telford, sharron you claim that Tory Boy makes you sick! …… have you any idea how much your remarks are sickening when weighed against the evidence of the inhumanity displayed against the millions of children even little babies who are slaughtered daily in Third World countries.
You cannot claim ignorance of these events! ….. not in these enlightened times and whilst your indignation for the demise of this unfortunate animal is understandable your degradation of Tory Boy is inexcusable.

T Bill,
I was refering to the “it’s only a dog comment”.
To him maybe it is only a dog, but to the owner it is a loyal companion, I would even go so far to say a friend for some people!
Also you state “your degradation of Tory Boy is inexcusable”, are his comments not a degradation of others comments? I think so!
Remember we are entitled to our own opinions and views, just as you are!

Sue,
My story is very similar to yours. My dad and my dog were out walking yesterday and were hit by a jeep. The driver never even stopped to see were they ok. Thankfully, my dad is ok, a few cuts and bruises but sadly our beloved Lacey was killed. We too rescued her from a pet centre and she brought so much joy and happiness into our lives. I feel so sad and hurt about what happened. I still cannot believe that the driver never stopped and left them there on the side of the road, I think thats what hurts the most. Take care Sue, and always remember the good times. R.I.P Lacey xxx
