What a week for the Bucks
Tuesday 10th February 2009, 7:44AM GMT.
It has been some week for Telford fans, what with all the action going on both on and off the pitch, writes AFC Telford blogger Joe Davies.
It started off last Saturday with a stunning away win against Kettering in the FA Trophy which had everyone, including boss Rob Smith, talking up the chances of the Bucks reaching the Wembley final.
More good news followed on Tuesday when the transfer window closed with the squad fully intact and having done our business with the signing of Phil Trainer.
It had been said that a few of the lads were being watched by league clubs and although it is good to see them playing well and attracting that kind of attention, it is obviously good from the club’s perspective that we managed to keep hold of them.
As Lee Carter and Rob Smith have said on record, we don’t need to sell but everyone knows how hard it would be for any player to turn down a league club, however well we are currently doing.
On Wednesday it was revealed that Andy Brown’s efforts this season had been recognised when England C manager Paul Fairclough named his squad, placing Brown on standby.
Although Brown has been injured lately it is good to see that we have the kind of players at the club that can get international recognition. He has been playing well and scoring goals on a regular basis and he deserves his call up. The achievement is even greater when considering the fact that the majority of the England C squad is picked from the Blue Square Premier.
On Friday, Rob Smith said that the game against Tamworth was one that we could not afford to lose and, to be honest, he was right.
On Saturday morning Rob and Larry sprung a surprise by announcing that they had completed the signing of striker Mark Danks after he left struggling BGB Southern League premier division side Halesowen Town. It appears to be another good signing as he has scored 16 goals already this season and has a good goal scoring record.
He went straight into the squad for the Tamworth game and started up front alongside Carey Bertram; it was Bertram who scored the decisive goal with a penalty on the stroke of half time.
It was a game that could have gone either way, with both sides missing good chances, but the first clean sheet since Christmas came at a good time for the Bucks.
The win puts us right back into the thick of things in the promotion race and hopefully after that defeat, Tamworth will be getting a bit nervy knowing they are under pressure.
Southport still have the upper hand, being three points behind with two games in hand, but it is tight again up at the top of the table and each of the top four teams will still believe that they can win the title.
