Service silent over fire inquiry

Tuesday 10th February 2009, 11:49AM GMT.

Fire crewA wall of silence today surrounded the suspension of control room staff at Shropshire fire headquarters in Shrewsbury.

Fire services chiefs and union officials are refusing to say why members of staff have been suspended or how many people are involved.

The workers, based at Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service’s headquarters in St Michael’s Street, Shrewsbury, were suspended yesterday as part of an internal disciplinary investigation.

Everyone working at the control room will be interviewed as part of the investigation. Officials will only confirm that more than one person had been suspended.

Chief Fire Officer Alan Taylor today said he could not reveal the reasons for the action because it could compromise the inquiry.

A spokesman for the Fire Brigade Union also refused to comment. Matt Lamb, brigade secretary for the FBU, said: “The investigative interviewers will interview a lot of people but I cannot tell you anymore than that until the investigative stage gets to the reporting stage.”

It is understood up to five people have been suspended.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Paul Raymond yesterday confirmed those involved were control room personnel and reassured people the move would not affect the duties of the fire service.

The fire authority is to meet tomorrow, when it is believed the issue will be discussed.
