Even Simpson loses patience

Paul SimpsonFor the first time this season Paul Simpson openly slammed his team following yet another away shocker, writes Shrewsbury blogger James Pugh.

It was the same old story a home win followed by an away defeat, but somehow we still remain in the promotion pack.  We can’t carry on like this until the end of season, surely!

For much of the season Simpson has defended his team and always looked for the positives, even after poor performances, but finally even he ran out of patience and criticised the team. You can’t blame him and instead of sulking hopefully the players will react positively and sort their form out.

Despite beating Accrington at home 2-0 we were far from convincing and the stylish attacking play has just disappeared from our game at the moment. One man who stood out for me was an opposing player that we decided to get rid of – Jimmy Ryan. I was disappointed to see him go and on that showing I have every right to be, although it is very easy to look back in hindsight. And who’s to say that if he played in a team with better players he would have stood out so much.

On Saturday’s showing it is hard to see where the next away win will come from. Yes, it was a mistake by Daniels for the goal, but he has kept us in so many matches this season it’s hard to be over-critical of him. You could say a big mistake from him was due, but let’s just hope he doesn’t make any more.

I don’t think anyone can argue against the red card for Darren Moss who let himself down and let the frustration shared by the rest of the team and fans get to him. It’s a shame because he has been excellent since getting back into the team and his absence will mean a chance for Herd to reclaim the right back spot. One thing that I would like to see our full-backs do more is get forward more and put some decent balls into the box.

There were very few positives to take out the game, with the only man really standing out being Coughlan, who has been one of Simpson top buys.  All the team need to take responsibility for the defeat, although you have got to feel some sympathy for the defence who have been so good this season.

What changes would fans make to improve our away day blues? At the moment I am not sure even Simpson knows what to do. One thing that I would like Simpson to do is challenge the team to score the first goal in the first ten minutes, rather than sit back. Trying something different can’t be a bad thing!

In a week where Town have two home games in a row, including a local derby against Chester, it provides us with a good chance to get maximum points and give Simpson and the players more thinking time for putting the away form right.

You are absolutely right about Jimmy Ryan. He is exactly the sort of player we have been missing this season. He bossed the midfield last Tuesday and looked real quality. He will go on to play at a higher level as many of us thought at the time. Letting him go was a real mistake by Paul Simpson and when you think he was replaced by Hindmarch it looks even worse. I still believe Simpson is the right man for the job and will get the support from the fans but he must be less patient with his underachievers.

The players spent the night in a hotel before the match and they still cant win. I suggest that they travel on the day of the game regardless of distance and at least save the club a few hundred quid in accomodation expenses. The team cant do any worse and they might buck their ideas up for the remaining away games this season.
