FTSE 100 lifted by Barclays

The FTSE 100 rose 15.74 points to close at 4,307.61, lifted by a rise in Barclays’ shares.
Barclays was up 10.88 per cent to 116.20p by the end of the session, after reporting profits ahead of expectations.
The jump, along with a sharp 10.86 per cent rise in mining firm Kazakhmys, helped keep the index out of the red for a fifth day and above the 4,300 threshold.
Royal Bank of Scotland shares followed Barclay’s rise and were up by 3.75 per cent. However, Lloyds Banking Group shares were lower by 4.29 per cent.
British Sky Broadcasting was second on the list of biggest fallers for the session, dropping by 3.65 per cent.
Over in the US, the Dow Jones index dipped 17 points after opening to 8,263.46 as investors awaited an expected announcement on a financial package from president Barack Obama.
