Delays after lorry loses load

Monday 9th February 2009, 11:25AM GMT.

Concrete paving slabs fell off the back of a lorry close to a Shropshire town today causing lengthy delays to motorists.

The A49 was closed after a lorry shed part of its load between Whitchurch and Bickley Moss, Cheshire.

West Mercia Police were called to the incident at 5.30am today, where the lorry had dropped concrete paving slabs.

Maria Hawkaluk, police spokeswoman, said police informed Cheshire Council, and the road was closed until 7.15am, when one carriageway was opened.

Alex Taylor, who was using the road at about 8.30am today, said debris was “strewn across the road” and a police van was blocking one side of the carriageway off.

Mr Taylor said: “There were a lot of concrete slabs and some wooden pallets and some yellow plastic covering which would have been holding them on to the lorry, and all the concrete slabs were strewn across the road.”
