Danks happy to be at Bucks

Monday 9th February 2009, 1:30PM GMT.

Mark DanksNew AFC Telford United striker Mark Danks today revealed his delight at moving to “the biggest club in non-League football” – and set his sights on promotion.

The pocket-sized hitman, who celebrated his 25th birthday yesterday, made his debut in Saturday’s sensational 1-0 victory over Blue Square North leaders Tamworth.

Danny Carey-Bertram scored the winner from the penalty spot, but Danks also caught the eye with an energetic display.

His move from Halesowen was only made public at lunchtime on Saturday, and he revealed how his relationship with boss Rob Smith had been a big factor.

“I’ve known the gaffer for a while and I know he’s got big plans for the club so I’m glad to be part of it,” said the former Wolves, Bradford, Hednesford and Worcester man.

“I’ve had a few issues with Halesowen and I was looking to get away and just enjoy my football again.

“I spoke to the gaffer after I came out of my contract (at Halesowen) and there was no real thought involved – it was a yes from the start.

“It was not a question of even seeing if anyone else was interested. This is the biggest club in non-League and I just want to progress and be a part of it.”

The result means the Bucks are now just three points adrift from The Lambs in what is turning into a tense promotion race, with Gateshead and Southport also in the mix.

But Danks added: “What happened on Saturday shows that we’ve got the character.

“They’re a great bunch of lads and I think there’s no reason why we can’t go on and win the league.”

Midfielders Lee Moore (ankle) and Liam Blakeman (calf) both picked up injuries during Saturday’s victory.

Blakeman is now rated as a big doubt for tomorrow night’s Setanta Shield northern area final at Barrow, but Moore’s prospects look brighter.

That game looks likely to go ahead, with no weather problems currently at Holker Street.
