Snowdon death man named
Monday 9th February 2009, 2:28PM GMT.
A 27-year-old Shropshire photographer has died while taking pictures in the Snowdonia mountain range in North Wales.
The body of Gwyn Norrell, from Snailbeach, near Shrewsbury, was found on Mount Snowdon at 4.45pm on Saturday.
His parents Diane and Clive today paid an emotional tribute to their son who they described as a “unique” person.
Diane said her son, a talented photographer, had gone to Snowdon on Friday morning to take pictures.
She said: “It was a beautiful and clear day and he went up there with his camera and tripod.
“He was just planning to spend the day there and would have come back normally and shown us the results of his photography.
“He was an excellent photographer and he has always enjoyed walking, nature and wildlife. He loved the natural world.”
She said Gwyn had been to Snowdon many times having been first taken there when he was six months old.
Gwyn was born in Shrewsbury and lived in Snailbeach all his life. He worked in the plant room at the creamery in Minsterley.
As well as his passion for photography Gwyn, who had two brothers Toby, 23, and Gregor, 24, was also a keen cyclist, walker and runner.
Diane added: “He was a completely contented and self-sufficient man, a unique individual.”
Mr Norrell’s body was discovered as Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team went to the aid of two men who had fallen from Clogwyn Coch.
One of the climbers used a lighter to attract the attention of the rescue helicopter crew, who were using night vision goggles after they were scrambled from RAF Valley in Anglesey.
The man was part of a group of four when he fell about 370ft on Saturday near Clogwyn Coch – 2,500ft up Mount Snowdon.
Another member of the group, who had serious head and chest injuries, was also airlifted to hospital.
