Rally for protests opposing mast
Saturday 7th February 2009, 10:50AM GMT.
Hundreds of people were expected to turn out at a protest rally in Shrewsbury today as two campaign groups joined forces to fight controversial mobile phone mast plans.
Residents and campaigners from Copthorne and Radbrook were expected to gather outside the Vodafone shop in Pride Hill and were due to be joined by Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski and Councillor Anne Chebsey, Mayor of Shrewsbury.
If proposals go ahead, one of the masts will be sited in Copthorne Road, close to the Woodfield County Infant School and St George’s Primary School and hundreds of homes.
Vodafone has also lodged an appeal with the Secretary of State in an attempt to put up a 10-metre mast in Bank Farm Road, Radbrook, after Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council refused approval under delegated powers last year.
Councillor, Judith Williams, said Vodafone should scrap any ideas for a mast in Copthorne.
She accused the firm of being “indifferent to genuine concerns”.
Vodafone has previously said that it takes neighbourhood concerns extremely seriously and it has held consultations.
With regard to the Copthorne proposals it has said the mast will operate under “stringent guidelines” and will pose no health risk.
