Danger claim over wait for crossing

Where is our pedestrian crossing? That is the question being asked by councillors in Wem who say they are fed up after waiting five months for work on a new crossing to be finished.
Councillors Chris Mellings and Pauline Dee say lives are being put at risk due to the delays in finishing off the crossing at Aston Street, Wem.
The pair today called on Shropshire County Council to make the crossing operational “as a matter of urgency”.
Work on the crossing began after property developers won planning permission to build a housing estate off Aston Street.
But, as a condition of the planning permission granted by North Shropshire District Council, the developer was told to pay for and install the new crossing.
In a statement Councillor Melling and Councillor Dee said: “We have long campaigned for and support a crossing there, but are concerned that five months on it still isn’t working.
“Pedestrians need to be able to cross safely and with certainty. Water also lies on the crossing, creating an additional hazard for pedestrians when attempting to cross. . .”
However, Shropshire County Council, which has responsibility for the road, said there were some “technical issues” to be resolved.
Andy Savage, county council highways development control team leader, said: “We are unable to give a completion date for the crossing as we are in the process of consulting with Morris Homes. However, we are working to have this crossing completed as quickly as possible.”
