Constable may need a new beat
Saturday 7th February 2009, 12:25PM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town reject James Constable has admitted that his future may lie away from Shropshire – despite restating his goalscoring credentials.
The 24-year-old has smashed 13 goals in 30 appearances this season while on loan at Blue Square premier league outfit Oxford United.
Five of those goals have come in his last eight appearances – and the U’s have all but confirmed that they will be making an offer to bring the burly frontman to the The Kassam Stadium on a permanent basis at the end of the season.
“I’m just enjoying every minute at the moment,” admitted Constable. “It’s nice to hit a purple patch.
“As long as I am playing well then I will attract interest from elsewhere, be it Shrewsbury, Oxford or someone else.
“The second you get asked to go out on loan, it’s quite a low point. You immediately think maybe they are not interested or maybe I am on my way out.
“From that point on, every game you are playing for your future.”
Sections of the Town supporters have questioned whether he should be given another chance at the club – but Constable insists that he is yet to hear from manager Paul Simpson.
Professional
He said: I’ve had no contact from Shrewsbury at all – I haven’t heard a thing from them from the day that I left.
“But at the end of the day, I am a professional and I’m not going to let it fester. I knew that this was a season-long loan.
“Oxford showed that faith in me to take me on for that length of time, so I am just trying to repay them.
“They have brought my game on massively to get where I am at the moment. The coaching has been first class.
“You tend to get pushed and kicked around a bit in this division, but I thrive on that – it really helps my game. ”
Malmesbury-born Constable has made just 14 first team appearances in blue and amber since joining the club little over a year ago, seven as a substitute, and has scored four goals.
