Strike to hit county rail services

Friday 6th February 2009, 3:00PM GMT.

Shrewsbury Railway StationRail users in Shropshire were today warned to brace themselves for “severe disruption” on Sunday because of unofficial strike action which has left many train services cancelled.

Arriva Trains Wales says services have been cancelled on five routes which take in the county including services from Shrewsbury to Birmingham and from the county town to Swansea.

Travellers are being urged to make alternative arrangements if they need to travel, with bosses of the rail firm apologising for the inconvenience.

Dennis Baker, Arriva Trains Wales human resources director, said: “This action is unofficial and is not supported by the drivers’ union Aslef. Discussions with trade union representatives over the outstanding pay negotiations for train drivers are ongoing.”

There will be no services on routes including Cardiff Central/Shrewsbury/Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly, Chester to Shrewsbury/ Birmingham International, and Aberystwyth/Machynlleth to Shrewsbury/Birmingham International.

There will also be no services on the Swansea to Shrewsbury via the Heart of Wales line. Call National Rail Inquiries on 08457 484950 or visit www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk

This is not strike action. This is being caused by staff shortages. Sundays are not part of the working so how can you strike on your day off work?

Arriva like to class this as industrial action to save themselves a lot of money. When trains are cancelled because of industrial action the train company does not have to pay cancellation fines or provide road transport for passengers.

It is true that the drivers are in dispute over pay but this is for a pay increase that should of been received July 2008.

Big companies always stall on pay talks, this makes them 10′s of 1000′s of pounds in interest.
