Ex-swim trainer admits voyeurism

Friday 6th February 2009, 3:30PM GMT.

David DuroA former Shrewsbury swimming coach, who worked in the town’s public baths, has admitted voyeurism and making an indecent photo of a child.

David Duro, 38, formerly of Glebe Road, Bayston Hill, worked at the Quarry Swimming Pool until earlier this year, but has since moved to Derbyshire.

At Shrewsbury Magistrates Court yesterday, he admitted two charges of voyeurism in a pool at Ecclesbourne, Derbyshire, in 2005.

The other charges, which did not occur at swimming pools, related to two acts of voyeurism in Shrewsbury between January 1, 2006 and March 15, 2008 and on July 24, 2006 as well as making an indecent video of a child on May 26, 2006.

Magistrates ruled they had insufficient powers to deal with the case and committed the case to Shrewsbury Crown Court for sentencing at a later date.

Mr Paul Davies, prosecuting, said the Amateur Swimming Association contacted police about Duro, a father-of-one, in April 2008.

He said: “On April 23, a search was carried out at his home address in Glebe Road, Bayston Hill. Various items were taken from that address, including four computers and a mobile phone.

“It became immediately apparent there were many images of a swimmer, which included video footage and also images and videos of Mr Duro carrying out sex acts with this female, some carried out before the female was 18,” he said.

“A further examination of the computer recovered video footage of 10 females undressing or dressing in a make-shift changing room.”

Mr Davies said the identities and ages of the females were unknown. Mr Davies said in interview Duro, now of Harvest Grove, Moira, told police he had been “stupid and was very sorry for what he had done”.

Mr Dean Easthope, for Duro, said: “He was a swimming coach. He has lost that and has been doing what work he can.” Duro was granted bail on the condition he does not enter Shrewsbury swimming baths.
