Friday 6th February 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

A recording of the moments before a passenger jet crash-landed on a New York river has been released in the US – and reveals the pilot calmly announcing that he was about to crash-land.

In the recording, released by the Federal Aviation Administration, pilot Chesley Sullenberger calmly announces that the plane’s engines have been knocked out by a bird strike.

Mr Sullenberger’s flight got into trouble moments after taking off on January 15.

But his calm actions and perfect water landing saved the lives of all 155 passengers and crew.

He has been hailed a hero in the US and around the world.
