Woman dies in car crash

Thursday 5th February 2009, 10:59AM GMT.

PoliceA woman has died after her car left the road near Oswestry collided with a hedge and overturned. Her car was discovered by police at about 9.15pm yesterday.

It took more than an hour to release the woman from the grey Ford Focus on the A483 at Llynclys.

She was given emergency treatment for serious multiple injuries at the scene, before being rushed to hospital, where she later died.

Two fire crews from Oswestry used hydraulic cutting equipment to release the woman from the car.

The fire incident commander from Shrewsbury and the rescue tender from Wellington also attended.

Police closed the road while emergency services worked at the scene and diverted traffic through Morton.

Sergeant Andy Pugh, speaking at the scene, said police had noticed the woman as they drove past.

Inspector Ray Harrison said the woman had suffered serious injuries.

“It was reported to the police at about 9.15pm.

“One vehicle had overturned and was in a field. Police officers found the accident.”

Suzie Fothergill, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman, said an ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and a team of doctors were dispatched to the scene.

She said: “On arrival at the scene, crews found a single vehicle which had left the carriageway and had collided with a hedge.

“Ambulance staff and the doctor continued to provide the woman with emergency medical treatment as she was conveyed to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The hospital was alerted to the arrival of the woman and the seriousness of her injures.

“Unfortunately despite the best efforts of ambulance staff and hospital medics the woman was later confirmed dead at the hospital.”
