I drove from Telford to Newport this morning. No particular problem with the roads, other than a bit of slush and the usual gaggle of overly-timid drivers.
It was slower than usual but perfectly passable. I saw one A.T. Brown school bus on the roads, so clearly they were capable of going about their business.
I don’t believe any of these schools are closed due to any real risk to our children’s health and safety, but more out of a collective, tabloid-driven paranoia, and the proliferation of ambulance-chasing law firms (have you had an accident at work?…).
We have become a society convinced that there’s a perv lurking around every corner, that feels the need to batten down the hatches at even modest snow, that fears harmless technology, small amounts of pollution when generations grew up healthy through smoke and smog-filled days, and would rather believe bad science than innoculate our kids against damaging childhood illnesses.
In most respects our kids are at far less risk
than when I was young. They are strapped in to safer cars, many childhood illnesses that were prevalent then are largely kept at bay, fewer of them live in smoke-filled homes, and the incidence of ‘stranger danger’ is no higher than it was decades ago.
We really should be ashamed of ourselves…
