Smith’s vow to ‘critics’
Thursday 5th February 2009, 1:00PM GMT.
Boss Rob Smith today promised to give his all to bring cup success to AFC Telford United – despite warning it would hinder their promotion prospects.
The Bucks go into the last three months of the season still aiming to win silverware on three fronts.
Promotion to the Blue Square Premier is the priority, but they are also through to the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy and have a Setanta Shield area final at Barrow to look forward to on Tuesday.
“It finally hit home for me how hard it’s going to be when I was looking at the fixtures yesterday,” said Smith.
“We’re playing two games a week virtually every week for the rest of the season – and that’s without getting through any of the cup games. It opens your eyes to the task we’re facing.
“It’s pretty daunting but, at the start of the season I had the chairman, director Wyn Pryce and some supporters virtually taking the mickey out of our cup record.
“We’ve put that right this season, but it is going to hinder us in the league now.
“The one thing I can promise is that we will give it a go.”
Telford are due to travel to Tamworth for a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday, though that game will be dependent on the hosts’ ground, The Lamb, being playable despite the weather.
Smith is working on the assumption it will be on for now, and has ordered his players to make every effort to make it to training at the TCAT Dome tonight.
One man who will be back in the ranks is midfielder Emeka Nwadike, who returns to the Bucks fold after completing a loan spell at Hinckley.
“They want to keep him, but they’ve got a few problems,” Smith added.
“They’ve got a transfer embargo on them at the moment and can’t sign anyone.”
