Shop owner ‘took own life’
Thursday 5th February 2009, 10:45AM GMT.
A Telford shop owner whose death sparked a police investigation took his own life, a jury has ruled.
Jasvir Singh Sambhi was found hanged at Trench Lock 2, Trench Lock, in Telford on January 19 last year.
The 37-year-old, who had suffered from paranoid psychosis 12 months earlier, was discovered hanged from his van with his legs bound with rope and his wrists chained and padlocked behind his back.
A police investigation found nobody else was involved.
At the end of a two-day inquest at the Park Inn, Telford, the jury returned a narrative verdict, saying that all police and health authority procedures were followed correctly in the days leading up to the father-of-two’s death, but that they were inadequate.
The verdict read: “Although the current procedures and policies were fully adhered to by West Midlands Police and local health authority, these policies were inadequate to prevent Jasvir Singh Sambhi’s suicide.”
It came after Mr Sambhi’s wife, Amarjeet Kaur Sahni, of Hadley, Telford, told the inquest how she begged for help for her husband who she said was having a relapse of paranoid psychosis for which he was sectioned 12 months earlier. A huge police search was launched when he went missing in the days before his death, before he returned home, was arrested and then released.
After yesterday’s verdict, Mrs Sahni said: “I’m very pleased with the verdict. It was exactly what I wanted but didn’t expect.”
