Iwelumo keen to end goal drought

Chris IwelumoChris Iwelumo insists Wolves being top is the only thing “keeping him sane” – but insists he can recover from goal drought.

The 15-goal Scotland international hasn’t scored in 10 appearances since November 25.

Iwelmo has lost his place to Andy Keogh – himself under fire from some fans – as Wolves have struggled to see off opposition through defensive lapses.

“It’s one of those things where when things start not going for you in front of goal, you maybe start analysing things and thinking about things too much,” said Iwelumo.

“I know what I’m about – I’ve been through dry spells before and always got my goals.

“But there’s a bigger picture and if we keep picking up the points, we can achieve it.

“That’s what’s keeping me sane at the minute and that’s why I can take it on the chin.

“I’ll do whatever I can to get myself back in the team.

“But the boys are playing really well and scoring goals so it looks like I’m going to be waiting for a little while.”

Iwelumo remains philosophical at his absence however.

“It just shows the squad we’ve got,” he said. “Unfortunately, I’ve dried up a bit at the minute, but Vokesy, Keogh and Sylv are all firing so I’ve got to wait for my chance and when that comes, I’ve got to be sure to take it with both hands.

“That’s what football is all about – there are so many ups and downs, it’s just how well you deal with that.

“But I’ve shown before that I can take the downs as well as anyone and bounce back. So I’ve just got to do everyone within my power and when that chance comes, take it.”

Meanwhile, Iwelumo has backed new £2m signing Christophe Berra to add quality to Wolves’ beleaguered defence.
