Bangor hopes to buck racing woes
Thursday 5th February 2009, 12:15PM GMT.
Officials at Bangor-on-Dee are cautiously optimistic about their chances of staging tomorrow’s National Hunt race meeting – despite the wintry weather.
This evening’s card on the all-weather track at Wolverhampton was was also called off, while today’s card at Huntingdon was a casualty.
But officials at Bangor, on the north Shropshire border, remain confident of their prospects, despite planning a precautionary inspection for later today.
Clerk of the course Ed Gretton said: “We’ve had a light covering of snow this morning and I guess we’ll get a few more light flurries.
“There is currently about 6mm of snow lying on the track and we’ll have a better idea by teatime.”
The other National Hunt action tomorrow is due to take place at Kempton, and staff there are planning to inspect the course at 8am before taking a decision.
But there was some relief for race fans today, with Taunton managing to beat the weather and stage the first jumps racing of the week.
Clerk of the course Michael Trickey said: “We had light overnight snow, with minimum temperatures not even getting to minus-one. The going is hardly pristine, but at least we are racing.”
And that was good news for champion jockey Tony McCoy who re-routed from Huntingdon to continue his quest for the two winners he requires to reach 3,000.
Wolverhampton lost one meeting to the snow earlier in the week, and clerk of the course Fergus Cameron warned: “It’s been snowing here since 5am and we’ve had 4cm.”
Newbury’s big Saturday card is already a doubt.
