Simpson: “We can be even better”

Paul SimpsonShrewsbury Town were today celebrating breaking back into the League Two play-off places – as manager Paul Simpson declared: “We can still do better.”

Last night’s 2-0 home victory over Accrington helped Shrewsbury move into sixth place in a promotion race which looks certain to go down to the wire.

Simpson was delighted with the three points which came courtesy of a Graham Coughlan header and a Grant Holt penalty, but still believes his side have got more to offer.

“We were more of a threat and more positive last night but I still think we can be better,” he said.

“I might be being picky and people might think I’m just moaning for the sake of it.

“But I think we have got the players that, if they calm down and play with confidence and have the belief I have in them, I think we can be better.”

Simpson admitted victory last night was vital in the wake of Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat by Brentford.

“We just needed three points,” he added. “It would have been nice if the performance was better but it was a tricky game.

“Accrington are always a difficult team to play against and the situation they are in at the moment means there is no pressure on them.

“They are probably not going to get to the play-offs and they are about 15 points clear of worrying about relegation – they are just going to play freely and it makes it difficult to play against.

“But we went about our business and got ourselves into a good lead and hopefully we can get that nervousness out of us which I felt we had a little bit last night.

“It’s a clean sheet and another three points and now we have to move on.

“We can’t keep talking about wanting to get the away form going. We have to do it – and it would be nice if it started on Saturday (at Bournemouth).”

Town reserves were in action at Mansfield this afternoon.

must have lowered theirs and this newspapers over the top expectations if getting back into a play-off place on a night when hardly any matches took place is a reason to be “celebrating” :-)
