Powys County Council announced today that all the county’s schools would be closed due to a warning of further heavy snow.

The authority said it had taken the decision following updated weather advice which forecasts further significant snowfall across the county overnight.
Schools are expected to re-open on Friday, but a countywide decision will be made tomorrow afternoon.
Douglas Wilson, head of schools and inclusion with Powys County Council, said: “Decisions such as these are not taken lightly.
“We have taken this decision following the latest weather advice and to remove any uncertainty.”
This notice also applies to non-school based educational settings where pupils have to travel.
Earlier this week, Powys schools were hit hard by the snowfall.
Nearly 70 schools were closed on Tuesday.

Remember ”the good old days” when we as children were expected to attend school whatever the weather?
What’s the difference today?
I will tell you what the difference is today ,its called the Health & Safety Act.
Authorities are frightened of their own shadows.
They worry about being sued and loosing their jobs NOT the H&S of the pupils or Staff.

I think pupils should be encouraged to try and get in to school. No excuse for pupils who live in walking distance. And lets face it most roads are clear and teachers can get in if they try hard enough. This only travel if you must is rubbish if we all listened to that shops would be empty no fire service, no police, no post, no drs, , no garages, etc etc .People in the uk need to try harder and stop whinging 2-7 inches of snow should not stop anything.

“Because of the threat of heavy snow”, its not we will close the schools because it may snow, its because of the threat! what happened to walking to school, or if you live where the snow may block your road, hitch a ride on a tractor or put some stabalizers on a push bike! what if you really needed to get some food from a shop and the nearest shop was 5 miles, how would you get there when there is 6″ of snow.

Well Icy Armageddon failed to arrive. We are now officially a nation of Health & Safety bed-wetters. I don’t think this silly nannying is helping children. Is ‘risk’ not part of life & growing up?

Why not cancel the weeks half term break this month and use the time to catch up all the hours lost due to closures relating to the snow?
