DIY late hours plan rejected

Wednesday 4th February 2009, 12:20PM GMT.

DIYA new £18 million DIY store in Shrewsbury has been given the go-ahead to open at 7am but must close its doors by 8pm.

Bosses of the B&Q store in Featherbed Lane, in Harlescott, had hoped to extend their hours until 10pm but members of the development control and environmental protection committee last night branded the move as “unacceptable”.

Councillors agreed the doors could open an hour earlier each morning from Monday to Saturday but said the Sunday opening hours must remain at 10am to 4pm.

Nearby residents hit out after store bosses applied to open from 7am until 10pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9am until 4pm on Sundays.

They have branded the development, which opened last week, a “monstrosity” and had started a petition to protest against the proposed opening hours fearing an increase in traffic and noise.

Planning officers at Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council recommended that the extended opening hours should be approved but councillors decided that it should only be allowed to open an extra hour.

I find that decision very strange when you can take a few steps over the road and find Tesco open 24 hours!

it say “a “monstrosity” and had started a petition to protest against the proposed opening hours fearing an increase in traffic and noise.” – well hasnt it always been an idustrial type estate. why live in that location if you get annoyed with traffic and industry!

Blimey! I went to that B&Q for the first time last autumn. It was a disgrace (lovely staff, but really old-style B&Q with no facilities). A town the size of Shrewsbury really needs a proper B&Q open till 10. You don’t have to live in a backwater, you make it that way yourselves.

The quality of decisions made by “Planning” seem to be inconsistant and bias.
