It could have been worse

Tuesday 3rd February 2009, 2:00PM GMT.

A snowman made by David and Sarah Reece, of BaschurchShropshire and Mid Wales were breathing a huge sigh of relief today after escaping the worst of the big chill – but forecasters warned more snow was on the way.

Conditions remained treacherous this morning with rush hour drivers urged to take care on icy roads.

But the region escaped the major snowfall which had been predicted and a round-the-clock operation by road chiefs kept most routes open throughout the night.

Now residents are being warned to brace themselves for the risk of further heavy snow which is predicted later this week.

John Warner, Shropshire Star weatherman, said more prolonged snow was expected to fall on Thursday with scattered snow showers expected today and tomorrow.

He added: “Shropshire seems to have missed the very severe frost which they had in southern England. The temperature was down to -10C (14F) in Hampshire overnight.

“In Shawbury it was only -1C (30F). I think it may have been a little bit lower in south Shropshire. We had a thaw overnight. The snow was not so bad on low ground.”

He said there had been a couple of inches of snow in the evening followed by a thaw.

“The outlook is for more cold weather for the rest of the week.”

Gritters were out again overnight across the region and in Telford & Wrekin roads have been gritted four times.

Telford police received a large number of weather-related calls overnight after vehicles got stuck or were involved in collisions.

And there were reports of youths throwing snowballs at properties and passing vehicles, which led to a window being broken at one Donnington home.

In Shropshire about 47 schools were closed today compared with about 45 yesterday. While in Telford & Wrekin of the 76 schools only five were shut today as a result of the weather. In Powys all schools fell victim to the weather today.

Officials at Ludlow were also forced to abandon tomorrow’s race meeting.

But officials at Shrewsbury Town were hoping that tonight’s League Two match against Accrington Stanley at the Prostar Stadium would go ahead.

Meanwhile three children, who are all believed to be under 10, have received hospital treatment for leg injuries including one who suffered a fractured leg after they collided with a tree while sledging near Tenbury Wells.

Four ambulances and a rapid response vehicle were called to Abberley Hall School near Abberley just after 4.45pm yesterday.

And delays and cancellations to flights at airports across the country because of the snow yesterday led to knock-on affects, including at Birmingham International.

  • Due to the bad weather and icy roads, collection crews have been unable to collect waste and recycling from some properties in the Bridgnorth and South Shropshire areas. However, residents affected are asked to leave their bins and/or boxes out and their waste will be collected as soon as possible.

    Hi Nigel,
I live about 400 miles NW of Calgary in interior BC – we have, as you know, 3 times the snowfall of Calgary and likewise – we live with it. I have about 2ft of snow on my roof at the moment with snowfalls almost every day since the start of November. Our schools haven’t been closed once and nobody has remarked on the winter conditions – no mention in the papers. Last April I left a small Alberta town at about 4am and drove the 400 odd miles over Rogers Pass etc., terrible driving conditions (snow drifts to 20ft) to get to work for my afternoon shift at 2pm.

We frequently get 30 to 50 centermetres in one night — my wife and I get up early (about 5am) to shovel the driveway before work.
That’s what you do when is snows — simple really isn’t it!

But then, I remember well the Shropshire winter of ’47……so have lots of experience.

Nevertheless – thank you to the photographers who have sent such beautiful photos of Shropshire – wonderful memories – even though there wasn’t a lot of snow.

Well Tony I am sure the snow doesn’t hit the news in Canada but that is because you are used to it and have the resources and correct equipment to deal with it. This is the first significant snow fall in 20 years so UK doesn’t do this! We could change our tyres to winter tyres but would have to change them back a day later so it would be pointless. Anyway, despite everything there is nothing we Brits like more than extreme weather conditions to talk about!

Hi Annie – guess we shouldn’t be quite so smug about things and of course we are used to it so therefore prepared. However, I do think there should be a little more planning in Great Britain as these things do happen – the lack of investment and perhaps hard work has set your economy back a few billion dollars.

Why would any youth throw snowballs at windows?
A lack of respect in today’s youngsters

For the Canadian residents, I am guessing your papers would have plenty to say if the temperature was in the 90′s in February. Accept that this is unusual for the UK & therefore newsworthy …. to a point and that point has probably past.

Let’s get back to the “cat rescued from tree” stories – they are soooo much more worthwhile.

Haha Y Mab Darogan – I’m 16 and i don’t throw snowballs at people’s windows! I think that’s awful! But please don’t stereotype us just because a few young people did it! I would never dream of it! And yeah fairplay we never get snow, but i agree with the canadians – we just need to get on with it, it’s not that bad! A couple of inches! We should be playing in it not complaining about it :)
