Tigers’ exciting new signing
Monday 2nd February 2009, 12:50PM GMT.
GM Telford Tigers swooped to secure an exciting new German player just hours ahead of the signing deadline.
Matthias Oertel, 21, is a forward who has played in a Canadian Junior ‘A’ league and Czech Extraliga under-20s.
Tigers player-coach Claude Dumas said: “I was sent Oertel’s information a few weeks ago and he looked interesting. When our talks with Ryan Caicco broke down, Oertel stood out as an alternative.
“He is big, young and we feel he can help us. He has a good size and has the advantage of not being attached to a team right now, so we don’t have those obstacles to deal with.
“Most recently he was playing university hockey in the States, which is a good calibre of hockey.”
Oertel stands 6ft tall and weighs around 200lbs. A right-winger, he was born in Bad Kissingen, Germany, and it is hoped he will fly to the UK on Wednesday to join Tigers.
Tigers team manager David Candlin said: “It really has been a race against time to secure this signing.”
