Shropshire was bracing itself for another blast of winter after weather forecasters warned Britain would be hit by the worst snowfall for 18 years.
The severe weather claimed the lives of two climbers who were found dead on Mount Snowdon this morning. Rescuers had been searching for two brothers from Weston-Super-Mare, who failed to return after climbing the mountain over the weekend.

The pair are believed to have been crossing Snowdon without ice axes or crampons in treacherous conditions.
An RAF helicopter battled poor visibility, strong winds and heavy snow to recover the bodies.
Many roads in Shropshire were already treacherous today after overnight snow showers and freezing temperatures, with hundreds of children given the day off school.
But the main belt of snow, which is already causing havoc in London and the South East, is due to sweep into the county tonight.
Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said: “It will snow heavily for seven hours from about 7pm and there will be 4ins to 6ins of snow lying on lower ground.
“We’ll get another heavy snowfall on Wednesday night and the weather will remain bitterly cold with further snow showers until Monday.”
The cause is a huge ridge of high pressure over eastern Europe which is dragging in a freezing cold, snow-filled airstream from France. The big chill is steadily moving northwards, causing chaos in its wake.
All bus services in London were cancelled today as were dozens of trains and airport runways at Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick and Birmingham were closed.
The Met Office described it as a “major snow event”, the worst since February 1991.
Arsenal’s FA Cup fourth-round replay against Cardiff tomorrow night has become the first high-profile footballing casualty of today’s heavy snowfalls.
The Gunners have acted early to call off the match at their Emirates Stadium.
Gritters were out all night and today, preparing for tonight’s expected snowfall, and emergency services urged people not to go out tonight unless the journey was absolutely necessary.
- Shropshire County Council’s County Training event, due to be held at Hollinswood House on Stafford Park this evening, has been cancelled. For further information call 01743 255164.

Well well well, I seem to remember so many doubters all saying that Mr Warner was wrong, and suggested he normally is. Yet here we are, snow as he so rightly predicted…and more to come too. Do I hear anyone eating their words now? Fat chance! Nor do I expect to see any apologies towards Mr Warner.

a bit of snow and you all turn into a bunch of babies and the country cant cope. the entire country is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. get a flipping grip on life.

PC brigade!
No snow balls and be careful making snowpersons!!

I would imagine all weathermen need to develop a thick skin – they are always remembered for getting it wrong and never when they get it right. So I doubt Mr Warner is too upset.
As for the weather – as usual it doesn’t take long for the schools to start closing does it? Fair enough out in the countryside, but why do places like Castlefields School in Bridgnorth have to shut?
Usual chancers taking the opportunity for some extra time off under the facile excuse of ‘health and safety’. Feather-bedded local authority employees should struggle to work the way most other people have to. How many bus services have been cancelled today? Not many I bet.

Wow Toad, you must be such an incredible person to be the ONLY person in the ENTIRE country who isn’t a baby and can cope with the snow… and you’re more use than a chocolate fire-guard. You’re my hero.

I am sick of this country coming to a stand still because of a bit of snow we used to have 6ft drifts when we were little and got on with it, other countries deal with it. GET ON WITH IT.

Yes Toad,
Perhaps you should thinking of running Britain as you sound such a hard and versatile boy !!
Good luck with the snow !!

remember the good old days when motorists were equiped with wheel chains, old sacks, rugs a`shovel, a flask with hot drinks and a few bars of chocolate.

Wow! Nice snow. Reminds me of northern Virginia (a bit TOO much, actually). And I’m the guy that wanted to winter in Shropshire because I thought it would be milder!

Seems to me most people have forgotten what snow is.
Beware – It does get so deep it can cover your shoes.

Jeepers – “Featherbedded local authority employees” eh? If working for a local authority is the utopia you seem to imagine it to be, feel free to apply for any of the many jobs advertised each week. If successful, then you’ll be entitled to make your observations instead of relying on the usual dated stereotypical claptrap as regularly seen on these forums.
As you may by now have guessed – I work for a local authority (I also work in the private sector). Guess what? I was in work at 7am this morning as were most of my colleagues. But hey, why let the facts get in the way of a good story?

this PROVES that global warming is a wishy washy greeny leftie hoax

re “Feather-bedded local authority employees should struggle to work the way most other people have to”. I’m one of the accused, I still managed to make it to Stafford this morning as did all of my colleagues.

jeepers who do you think got up before you to grit the road so that you could get to work? Some beurocrat with a cushy 9 to 5 and massive pension?

Come on guys. We all know how we can manage just fine in the snow. But it’s a great excuse to pause the rat race for a bit, finish work early etc. Not good if you can’t get home though.

John Smith,
The criticism of Mr Warner is that he regularly predicts extreme weather and it rarely happens. Inevitably, he will be correct once in a while, but that doesn’t make him immune to previous criticism.
Re criticism of John Warner, I agree with Peter, no apology is due on the basis of one correct prediction that just about every other forecasting organisation made as well.

i wish the tory boy would understand the science more and accept the problem on man made climate change like everybody else in the world does

Like to say a big ‘THANK YOU’ to the gritters who kept the A442 (Eastern Primary) and other roads open over the past week. I didn’t miss a day off work. Once again ‘THANK YOU’ you do a great job. Too many people are quick to compalin about the state of the roads, but do they stop to think, you too have to drive to work to collect your grit lorries. No one grits the roads for you.
