Pensioner in house fire
Monday 2nd February 2009, 11:49AM GMT.
An 81-year-old man needed medical treatment after fire broke out in his Shropshire home.
Idris Roberts suffered mild smoke inhalation after the blaze in the living room of his house in New Road, Gobowen, yesterday evening.
The fire is believed to have started from a spark from his coal fire.
Stephen Roberts, his son, said Mr Roberts had escaped serious injury, but had to be checked over by paramedics.
Stephen said: “I think the fire started from a spark from his coal fire.
“I was in my house next door, and my dad came to tell me about the fire. I called the fire brigade and watched as they dealt with it.
“There’s not much damage, but there was some smoke. We will have to do a bit of redecorating.
“The paramedics came and checked him over, but he was ok.”
Two appliances from Oswestry and an officer from Shrewsbury attended the scene following the call shortly before 6pm.
Suzie Fothergill, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman, said paramedics were called at 6.30pm.
“We attended the address and checked a person,” she said. “They were suffering from mild smoke inhalation. They refused hospital treatment so we did not take anyone to hospital.”
