As forecasters predict the coldest February on record and snow has already covered most of the country this morning, we’ve put together some tips for safe driving if you’re out on Shropshire’s roads today.
1. Do a quick check before you leave
Tyres: Tread depth is especially important during the winter months. Also check your tyres for cuts or cracks. Over-inflated tyres are also particularly dangerous on icy roads, so make sure you check your tyre pressure too.
Anti-freeze: This should be changed every two years due to the deterioration of the corrosion inhibitors, and if left too long it can cause hose, water pump or other major units to fail, leading to overheating.
Battery: Battery failure is one of the top causes of breakdown assistance over the winter months. If your battery is a bit sluggish starting now, get it replaced immediately.
Headlamps: Keeping them clean with a wipeover means you will see better and, crucially, you will be seen more easily too. Check all the bulbs are all still working at the front and rear.
