Bucks advance in FA Trophy
Monday 2nd February 2009, 9:30AM GMT.
A gutsy performance at Kettering’s A Line Arena in font of 1,692 fans saw the Bucks secure a place in the quarter finals of the FA Trophy, writes blogger Joe Davies.
It concluded a double header between the two sides in cup competition which saw the Bucks come out on top in both the Setanta Shield and now the FA Trophy, and all within a fortnight, to continue our good cup form this season.
Travelling to Kettering, who are mid table in the Blue Square Premier, with a depleted squad due to cup ties and injuries, especially in the striking department, was a bit of a worry.
We did ride our luck a little in the second half and there were a few scary moments towards the end but we deserved to go through to the next round.
With Andy Brown and Terry Fearns out injured and Matty Lewis having only played three times for Telford since his comeback from the broken leg that kept him out for the first part of the season, Danny Carey Bertram is our only fully fit striker.
And it only took 23 minutes for Carey-Bertram to score what turned out to be the winner; back heeling Lee Moore’s shot past the keeper.
It means he continues his good scoring record (13 goals already this season). To be honest, his goal ratio this season is an impressive one; even more so when you think that for the most part he has been third choice striker behind both Andy Brown and Terry Fearns.
He has been in and out of the side really when both Brown and Fearns have been fit, but he has never let it distract or affect him and he has deserved his chance even if he only got it by default.
If he keeps up the good form we could be on our way to Wembley!
It was also encouraging to see Chairman Lee Carter give some public backing to Rob Smith and Larry Chambers in the week after Smith vented his fury at the recent poor performances by threatening to walk out.
Hopefully we will go into the game against Tamworth now full of confidence and pick up the three points we need to maintain our title.
