Berra ‘will be huge Wolves boost’

Monday 2nd February 2009, 12:55PM GMT.

Mick McCarthyWolves boss Mick McCarthy has hailed the impeding arrival of Hearts defender Christophe Berra as a valuable addition to his squad.

The Scottish international was in the stands at Molineux for Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Watford and was due to sign in a £2.3m move today after his medical over the weekend.

Berra, 24, was also linked with moves to Fulham and Sunderland but will be hoping to join them in the Barclays Premier League next season by helping his new club seal promotion.

“I’m delighted because Christophe will be a really good addition to the squad,” said McCarthy.

“He’s 6ft 3ins, left-footed with a bit of pace and a good defender who reads the ball well and is good in the air.

“He was the captain of Hearts and is an ambitious lad who’s in the Scotland squad at the moment and will be driven in wanting to get to the Premier League.

“He’ll fit in with the rest of the squad in wanting to push his career forward.”

McCarthy revealed Berra arrived with a glowing reference from Scottish legend Billy McNeill.

“I’ve seen Christophe play two or three times and Dave Bowman (chief scout) and Taff (Ian Evans) have watched him recently when he played well. We’ve had plenty of reports on him,” he added.

“He got a glowing recommendation from Billy McNeill who’s been my manager twice and is a great pal “They don’t get much better recommendations than from a great centre half like that – although he did sign me once!”
