Warnings as cold snap set to hit region
Saturday 31st January 2009, 11:21AM GMT.
Shropshire was facing the calm before the storm today as weather experts predicted a big freeze across the country.
Sunshine is forecast to accompany chilly winds from the east.
Then a cold snap is set to hit the country in earnest tomorrow, according to meteorologists.
People are being warned to wrap up warm and expect disruption on the roads as the wintry weather moves in.
Drivers in Shropshire were today urged to take extra care on the roads as snow, sleet, wind and low temperatures are all forecast for the week ahead.
Experts say snowstorms from Russia will herald the start of February during the coldest winter for 13 years.
Shropshire Star weather man John Warner said: “I’m expecting some snow showers during Sunday night and more snow on Monday.
“Then perhaps it goes slightly less cold on Tuesday with wet snow and sleet but it looks like there could be more on Wednesday and Thursday so at long last, it looks as though we will get a cold and snowy spell, which will be rather unusual for Shropshire as in the last few years, we have missed most of the heavy snow falls.”
The AA today warned motorists to ensure they keep warm clothes in their cars.
Sergeant John Roberts from West Mercia Constabulary urged motorists to take extra care.
He said: “It is important for motorists to remember that carrying out normal, everyday manoeuvres takes longer when the surface of the road is wet, icy or covered in snow.”
