Missing person alert prompts train search

Saturday 31st January 2009, 9:39AM GMT.

Police in stab-proof vests boarded a train in Shrewsbury after an officer thought he had spotted a missing person.

The Arriva Trains Wales Manchester to Milford Haven/Haverfordwest train arrived at Shrewsbury Station at about 2pm yesterday and was held at the platform while a team of British Transport Police (BTP) boarded and searched the carriages.

Passengers on the train said the officers looked through windows before boarding. One man travelling from Stockport to Ludlow, who did not wish to be named, said: “About eight male and female police officers got on while the train was stopped at Shrewsbury and went through the train looking for someone.

“At first they went along the platform looking through the windows, then they got on and looked at the people.

“They stopped at one man who was wearing a woolly hat and looked at him and said ‘You fit the description, but it’s not you.’ The police officers were only on the train for a few minutes and they got off and the train carried on towards Milford Haven.

“I thought they must be looking for someone in connection with something serious as there were so many of them.”

A spokeswoman for BTP said: “One of our officers thought they had spotted a missing person on the train.

“The officers went on board but it was not the person they thought it was.”
